Welcome to my musical identity website
Who are you? How is music part of your life? How does music become part of your identity?
My Research
My work at the University of Sheffield investigates what it means to 'be a brass musician' and how this might develop over the lifespan of individuals. There are many questions I am looking into, ranging from why people choose one instrument over another; why does a tuba player choose to play an instrument that might be as big as him? Does the stereotypical brass player really exist; are all brass musicians expected to be 'one of the lads?' Why choose to play in brass bands as a hobby; why do some people keep their music as a hobby and others move to become professional?
Take Part
The questionnaire on this website forms one of the largest social survey of brass musicians in the world. It takes 15-20 minutes to complete and is completely confidential. If you cannot complete it online and would like a copy posted to you please contact me. International responses are welcomed
